LCC entered the 2006 CIF San Diego Section playoffs as the top seed and didn’t disappoint, reaching the championship match with confidence. In the Finals, the Mav’s got off to an early start when Laura Maffucci tipped in a shot by Tara Arolla in the fourth minute. In spite of LCC continuing to dominate much of the play, rival Torrey Pines came back with two goals to lead LCC 2-1 at the half.
Midway through the second half, the Mav’s came level with the Falcons on a shot by Amanda Schutte from a Tara Arolla short corner. Tied, both teams played with a fierce intensity as the LCC defense did an outstanding job holding off repeated attacks while the Mavericks offense kept up the pressure.

With just three minutes left in the contest, sophomore Kristen Sondag tipped in a shot by Lauren Lucido for the winning goal as the LCC fans went wild. The final minutes saw a blistering attack from the Falcons but the Mav’s held tough, going on to win their second CIF title in a row and their third CIF championship in the past four years. Way to go Mavericks!
Senior Heather Alcorn and juniors Laura Maffucci and Lauren Greenwald were named to the Union-Tribune 2006 All-San Diego Section First Team. Alcorn, Greenwald and senior Lauren Lucido were named to the North County Times All-CIF First Team while Maffucci and junior Tara Arolla were named to its Second Team.
The CIF-San Diego Section recognized the entire team’s 2006 academic, not just athletic, achievement for earning the highest unweighted grade point average, 3.68, by all members of the team in the San Diego Section.

It was clear from the start of the season that expectations were high for LCC, which was coming off the prior year’s CIF win with returning head coach Kim Elmore and losing just three seniors. The Mav’s played outstanding field hockey from the first game to the last, finishing with the top record of 9-1 and an impressive 21-1 overall record. LCC’s biggest challenge came from nearby Torrey Pines, with both league games going to overtime and then finally strokes to determine a winner as the two teams split the games. The Mav’s will graduate just six seniors in 2006-07 so look out for another strong team with a number of returning juniors, sophomores and junior varsity players moving up.
California Cup & Serra Cup Champs
Palomar League 2006 Champions
2006 started off with a trip to Moorpark for the La Costa Rushers to play in the California Cup Tournament, where teams from throughout California as well the United States and Canada came together for some great competition. Playing in Cal-Cup’s 40-team women’s under-19 division, the LCC players came together to field an awesome team of their own. After several exciting, nail biting matches, the La Costa girls continued their strong play on to winning the prestigious Cal-Cup championship.

The LCC Mavericks played in the 2006 annual Serra Cup tournament, held shortly after the fall season began. Although the girls were coming off a long break from field hockey, they played well on their way to winning the tournament including a come-from-behind win over Scripps Ranch and a tied match that went to strokes against Torrey Pines.
